On November 27th, WHO held a routine press conference for COVID-19. WHO Director-General Dr.Tedros said that many countries have proven that existing tools can control novel Coronavirus. One of the common points is to emphasize virus detection.
Since the outbreak of the epidemic, WHO has always emphasized the importance of testing and has provided countries with testing tools. It has shipped millions of testing tools and other diagnostic supplies worldwide. WHO has also cooperated with countries to improve Test ability.
Dr. Tedros emphasized that with the introduction of vaccines, testing will still play a key role, and there is still a need for more and better testing tools that are easy to use, cheap, reliable and fast to take care of patients and trace contacts.
WHO and its partners are evaluating more than 50 diagnostic tools, and once proven effective, they can be incorporated into national strategies. In September of this year, the WHO released the first emergency checklist for rapid antigen testing. Such testing tools can produce results within 15 minutes. WHO and its partners will also purchase 120 million rapid antigen detection tools and provide them to 68 low- and middle-income countries around the world.
